Description

The Irwin 4-40 NC HCS Machine Screw Plug Tap – Bulk (1112) is a precision threading tool designed for creating accurate internal threads. Made from high carbon steel, this tap is built for reliability and longevity, making it an essential component for any toolbox. Its design is optimized for hand-threading applications, providing clean and consistent results whether you are repairing stripped threads or creating new ones. The #4-40 thread size and National Coarse (NC) standard make it the ideal tool for use with common machine screws, suitable for a wide variety of materials. This tool is a testament to quality craftsmanship, offering a straightforward and effective solution for professional tradespeople and serious hobbyists alike. It’s a fundamental piece of equipment for maintenance, repair operations, and general-purpose threading tasks, ensuring a perfect fit and strong thread engagement every time.

KEY FEATURES AND BENEFITS:

  • High Carbon Steel (HCS) construction: Offers superior hardness and wear resistance for extended tool life.
  • Plug Chamfer design: Features 3-5 chamfered threads, suitable for both through-holes and blind holes.
  • Straight flutes: Facilitate efficient chip removal, ensuring cleaner and more precise cuts.
  • Right-hand cutting direction: Standard for most threading applications.
  • Bulk packaging: Cost-effective for frequent users and professional workshops.

SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Tap Size: #4-40
  • Thread Standard: NC (National Coarse)
  • Material: High Carbon Steel (HCS)
  • Chamfer Style: Plug
  • Number of Flutes: 3
  • Cutting Direction: Right Hand
  • Thread Class: 2B
  • Recommended Drill Bit Size: #43

HOW TO USE:

  1. Prepare the Hole: Drill a pilot hole using a #43 drill bit. Ensure the hole is clean and free of debris.
  2. Align the Tap: Mount the tap in a suitable tap wrench. Place the tip of the tap into the pilot hole, making sure it is perfectly perpendicular to the material’s surface.
  3. Start Threading: Apply slight downward pressure and turn the tap wrench clockwise. The tap will begin to cut the threads.
  4. Clear Chips: After every half-turn to one full turn, reverse the tap wrench a quarter turn counter-clockwise. This action breaks the chips and clears them from the cutting flutes, preventing the tap from binding or breaking.
  5. Finish Threading: Continue turning the tap clockwise, reversing periodically to clear chips, until the desired thread depth is achieved. Remove the tap by turning it counter-clockwise.
